Blizzard Insists Actual Humans Are Reading Through All the WoW Forever Beta Character Names It Banned Players for This Week

World of Warcraft: Forever, an upcoming “Classic+” version of the MMO launching November 4, entered beta testing last week and immediately encountered moderation challenges. The beta flooded with players eager to test the new dual-name character system, which allows characters to have both first and second names. While the expanded naming options brought creative character names, it also resulted in numerous offensive and inappropriate names that bypassed Blizzard’s typical strict content filters.

In response, Blizzard began banning players who created characters with highly offensive names. The publisher warned the community against “testing” the moderation system. According to developers managing the beta, Blizzard has no tolerance for attempts to circumvent content guidelines, with one developer stating they have “no sympathy” for affected players.

The moderation challenge reveals an unexpected limitation in Blizzard’s name-filtering system during the beta. Unlike World of Warcraft’s standard live environment, which employs automated filtering that typically catches racist and disgusting character names and their variations, the beta saw more inappropriate names slip through than usual. This discrepancy appears to stem from the complexity of validating two-part character names rather than the traditional single-name format.

Rather than relying solely on automation, Blizzard developers have taken a hands-on approach, manually reviewing and flagging character names that violate content policies. One developer emphasized that they can access the complete database of all characters created, making it impossible for players to evade consequences. This direct involvement underscores Blizzard’s commitment to maintaining community standards during the beta phase.
