Microsoft CEO Attempts To Kill Remaining Xbox Goodwill
Microsoft’s gaming division has undergone significant restructuring, with Xbox having laid off 1,600 employees over the summer followed by additional layoffs and studio closures this week. In response to these workforce reductions, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella defended the actions during an appearance on the Sources Podcast, characterizing them as necessary streamlining efforts led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
Nadella expressed confidence in the division’s direction, stating he feels “fantastic” about Xbox’s intellectual property portfolio and the company’s ability to develop quality games moving forward. He emphasized that despite the layoffs, the studio roster and game IP remain strong assets for future production.
The CEO also highlighted the need to evolve Xbox’s business model, noting that the company must “invent the right sustainable business model that allows us to deliver gaming to more and more people.” This suggests Microsoft is focusing on long-term viability and broader market reach rather than immediate growth.
The restructuring represents one of the largest workforce reductions in recent Xbox history and signals potential strategic shifts in how the division operates. While Nadella’s comments aim to project stability and confidence in Xbox’s future, the scale of the layoffs has raised questions about the gaming industry’s consolidation trend and broader implications for game development.
