Larian Officially Ended Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC. Modders Missed the Memo

Larian Studios has officially ended development on Baldur’s Gate 3, with studio founder Swen Vincke announcing at a 2024 GDC panel that the company would not be creating new expansions, sequels, or additional D&D-related games. Instead, the developer plans to focus on entirely new projects outside the fantasy role-playing space. However, despite this definitive closure from the developer, the passionate modding community has stepped into the gap left behind. Since late July 2026 alone, at least four substantial custom campaigns have been released by dedicated fans, with a fifth already in active development.

Nearly three years after the game’s official launch, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to thrive within its community ecosystem. This situation illustrates both the enduring appeal and strong modding infrastructure of the game, as well as the broader pattern of fan-created content extending a game’s lifespan long after official development ends. The game remains a focal point for creative modding efforts, proving that community engagement can sustain interest and generate new content even when the original developer has moved on to other ventures.
