Epic Games Trademarks “Megaverse” After Losing A Case Over The Same Word

Epic Games has filed a new trademark application for “Megaverse,” a puzzling move given the company’s recent legal defeat over a nearly identical trademark. In 2022, Epic Games trademarked “Epic Games Megaverse” across multiple service classifications (09, 35, 38, 41, 42, and 45) related to digital content, retail, and entertainment. However, Megaverse Ltd., which already held the “Megaverse” trademark with overlapping goods and services, opposed Epic Games’s application in 2023.

The legal dispute ended in 2025 with a decision favoring Megaverse Ltd., effectively blocking Epic Games from using the “Megaverse” trademark. Despite this setback, Epic Games has now pursued a new trademark for “Megaverse” itself, seemingly setting the stage for another conflict with the same opponent. Industry observers have questioned the strategic wisdom of this approach, especially given the unchanged circumstances that led to the previous opposition.

The move highlights the complexities of intellectual property law in gaming and metaverse sectors. While “Megaverse” is clearly central to Epic Games’s branding strategy for its metaverse ventures, repeating this legal battle without an apparent new strategy risks proving costly. The company’s decision suggests it remains committed to the trademark despite the earlier loss, though the path forward remains unclear without fundamental changes to its application or strategy.
