Final Fantasy 7 director says Revelation’s Platinum trophy will be “easier to get”
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Platinum trophy became one of gaming’s most difficult achievements, with only 2.6% of players managing to unlock it. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed this was entirely intentional—the development team deliberately designed punishing requirements to push players to engage with and perfect the game’s extensive content library.
The decision, however, left the director with reservations. In an interview with Anime News Network, Hamaguchi acknowledged his “regrets” upon witnessing the player reaction, though he stopped short of calling it “a mistake in judgement.” The low unlock rate prompted reflection on whether the gatekeeping approach truly served the game’s community.
In response to this feedback, upcoming sequel Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will pursue a markedly different philosophy. Hamaguchi confirmed that Revelation’s Platinum trophy will be “easier to get,” representing a conscious step back from Rebirth’s demanding trophy list. This adjustment suggests Square Enix’s willingness to balance accessibility with the drive to encourage players to experience deep content—a middle ground between making the trophy attainable and maintaining the incentive for thorough engagement with the game.
