The GTA Series is a Game Preservation Nightmare
The PlayStation 5 cannot play a majority of Grand Theft Auto games, highlighting a broader video game preservation crisis. Of 16 current GTA titles—with another on the way—11 are completely inaccessible on the current PlayStation console, despite PlayStation’s historical association with the franchise. Unavailable games include GTA 4, the original GTA and its expansions, GTA 2, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, both GTA 4 expansions (The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony), GTA Advance, and Chinatown Wars.
This situation reflects a systemic industry problem where video games become deprecated as each new console generation emerges, typically every seven to ten years. While backward compatibility has improved since the PlayStation 4 era, significant gaps remain on current hardware, effectively locking essential chapters of gaming history away from players. The situation demonstrates how commercial decisions and technological transitions create preservation barriers, leaving iconic titles inaccessible despite their continued cultural significance.
