‘Futurama’ Creator Officially Confirms the Sci-Fi Series’ Surprising 2027 Plans

Futurama’s latest season finale “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion,” released on Hulu, was originally written as a definitive series ending before the show’s renewal was secured. Showrunner David X. Cohen, who co-created the series with Matt Groening, confirmed that the writing team didn’t know if the show would continue when they developed the episode, so they crafted it with the intention of it being the last episode ever. This uncertainty informed the episode’s high-concept narrative approach.

The finale centers on a nostalgic storyline featuring Fry and his brother Yancy attempting to finish watching a movie from their childhood in the 20th century. The pair had snuck into a PG-13 screening as kids but were kicked out before reaching the ending, which serves as the episode’s central plot device. Despite functioning as a potential series conclusion, Futurama will continue with three television specials scheduled for 2027, ensuring the show’s return to audiences following the events of this ambiguously conclusive finale.
