Blizzard’s MOBA Is Making An Unexpected Comeback
Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2026 the return of support for Heroes of the Storm, its MOBA that has largely been in maintenance mode since 2019. Xal’atath, the game’s first new hero in nearly six years, is now live and marks a significant milestone for the aging title. She is the 91st hero to join the Nexus and the first new character added since Hogger debuted in December 2020.
Xal’atath is a World of Warcraft character, specifically the Harbinger of the Void from the MMO’s recent Midnight expansion. Her introduction to Heroes of the Storm appears to signal more than just a one-time release. Blizzard stated that depending on community response, the company may consider adding additional heroes to the roster, suggesting a potential sustained return to active development.
To celebrate the launch, Blizzard is offering exclusive Twitch drops through October 5, with rewards scaling from 1,000 gold for an hour of viewing time to Epic and Legendary loot chests for extended engagement. The promotional campaign indicates a serious push to reinvigorate interest in a game that, while retaining a dedicated player base, has largely faded from public consciousness.
The addition of Xal’atath represents a meaningful moment for Heroes of the Storm fans who have waited years for new content. Whether Blizzard follows through with additional heroes and sustained support will determine if this marks a genuine revival or a limited celebration of the game’s continued existence.
