Activision Keeps Saying All The Right Things About Modern Warfare 4

Activision has announced a significant quality-of-life improvement for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: double XP tokens will now only count down during active matches, rather than continuously from the moment they’re activated.

This addresses a long-standing frustration in the Call of Duty franchise. Previously, players who activated a double XP token would watch the timer deplete even when they weren’t earning experience points—while in pre-game lobbies, adjusting loadouts, searching for matches, or checking challenges. A 30-minute token could effectively deliver only a fraction of its intended playtime bonus if players spent time in menus or waiting between matches.

With Modern Warfare 4’s launch on October 23, Infinity Ward is implementing a change that ties the XP timer to actual in-game time rather than real-time countdown. This means players can take breaks without losing bonus progression, step away to let their dog out, grab food or a drink, or manage their loadouts without the token’s duration being wasted.

The announcement has been well-received by the gaming community, as it represents exactly the kind of player-friendly adjustment fans have requested for years. It’s part of a broader effort by Activision to address player concerns ahead of Modern Warfare 4’s release, with studio developers discussing various improvements and features for the game.

This change exemplifies how listening to player feedback can result in meaningful quality-of-life improvements that don’t necessarily overhaul gameplay mechanics, but significantly enhance player experience and satisfaction with the game’s progression systems.
