“We clearly handled that responsibility poorly”: Paradox ban Discord profile pics of historical figures born after 1800, after bust-up with Hearts of Iron 4 players over Atatürk banning

Paradox Interactive has implemented a new Discord policy banning server members from using profile pictures of historical figures born after January 1, 1800, except for official in-game portraits from Hearts of Iron 4. The policy emerged following community controversy when a moderator banned a player for using a photograph of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

The incident sparked significant backlash from the Hearts of Iron 4 community, prompting Paradox to acknowledge their handling of the situation was inadequate. A studio representative stated: “We clearly handled that responsibility poorly,” emphasizing that “Paradox never aims to review history or take positions on political figures.”

Under the new guidelines, Discord members can use official Hearts of Iron IV in-game portraits, including those depicting figures from after 1800, with an explicit exception for prominent leaders of Nazi Germany. This reflects the studio’s efforts to establish clearer moderation standards while navigating complex historical and political sensitivities in strategy gaming, where historical context is central to gameplay and community discussion.
