Marvel’s Wolverine finally lets you turn off “fart gas” scent trails completely, but there’s a catch

Marvel’s Wolverine receives a new gameplay update that addresses a long-standing player complaint about the game’s prominent blue scent trail visual effects, often humorously referred to by players as “fart gas.” The latest patch, version 1.001.006, introduces three separate toggles in the Gameplay menu, allowing players to individually disable scent trail effects for Whiskey Bottle collectibles, Material Crate audio pings, and Nightmare Door roots.

However, the update comes with a notable limitation: the scent trails cannot be completely disabled. Developer Insomniac Games has maintained the visual indicators for what they describe as “story-critical” moments, meaning players will still see these trails during essential narrative sequences.

The bright blue scent trails were designed to help guide players to mission objectives and highlight hidden collectibles throughout the game world. While initially intended as a helpful navigation aid, many players found the constant visual presence distracting and immersion-breaking, particularly given Wolverine’s supposed supernatural sense of smell—hence the community’s tongue-in-cheek “fart gas” nickname.

This update represents Insomniac’s attempt to balance player preferences for visual customization with its design intentions for guiding player progression. The partial toggle system suggests the developer views the scent trails as an important accessibility and navigation feature that should remain visible at critical junctures, while acknowledging that their omnipresence may detract from the gameplay experience in other contexts.
