World of Warcraft: Forever dev teases new ‘mega dungeon’ to get lost in for hours like the good ol’ days

World of Warcraft: Forever is teasing a new “mega dungeon” designed to provide lengthy, immersive dungeon-diving experiences reminiscent of classic World of Warcraft. According to Josh Greenfield, senior game designer for WoW: Forever, the new dungeon aims to capture the feeling of getting lost for hours in expansive underground complexes.

The mega dungeon concept refers to large, sprawling dungeons that require approximately the same amount of time to complete as a raid but only require a five-person group. The design inspiration is Blackrock Depths, a legendary location from early World of Warcraft that serves as the community’s reference point for this type of content.

Blackrock Depths exemplifies the mega dungeon experience, set within a massive Dwarven city containing approximately 20 boss encounters and numerous branching paths. This type of content appeals to players seeking substantial, self-contained challenges that offer raid-scale complexity without requiring full raid coordination.

The announcement reflects WoW: Forever’s focus on recapturing early World of Warcraft’s feel, when dungeons were more complex, time-intensive, and rewarding to explore. By introducing a new mega dungeon, the project aims to deliver the discovery and accomplishment that made classic Blackrock Depths legendary.
