Discord’s new resource-light ‘Game Mode’ doesn’t mention anything about reducing memory usage
Discord is launching a new “Game Mode” designed to optimize resource usage during gaming sessions. The feature will automatically reduce animations and disable visual effects when the application detects active gameplay, freeing up CPU and GPU resources to potentially improve game performance. The mode was initially reported by the unofficial Discord Previews X account and subsequently confirmed by Discord.
However, the optimization appears incomplete: while the feature reduces CPU and GPU usage, Discord makes no mention of addressing memory consumption—a notable omission given Discord’s well-documented reputation as a resource-intensive application. Memory usage has long been a persistent complaint among Discord users, particularly those with system constraints or demanding gaming requirements.
The Game Mode represents Discord’s effort to create a more gaming-friendly experience with fewer performance interruptions during gameplay. However, observers have highlighted that the feature’s scope falls short of addressing one of the platform’s most significant performance issues. For users on resource-constrained systems or seeking to maximize frame rates in demanding titles, the lack of memory optimization may significantly limit the practical benefits of this new mode.
