Majority Of Gears Of War: E-Day Revenue On Xbox Will Be Cannibalized By Game Pass, Analyst Says
Gears of War: E-Day is launching on October 6 with early access starting October 1, arriving on Xbox Game Pass alongside a Steam release. According to analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics, the majority of the game’s revenue potential on Xbox will be “cannibalized” by its inclusion in the Game Pass subscription service, as players accessing the game through the subscription represent lost direct purchase revenue.
Despite this concern for the Xbox platform, E-Day has already demonstrated strong commercial performance on Steam, where it has surpassed 120,000 copies sold and generated over $7 million in revenue. The game’s early sales on PC have significantly outpaced comparable launches, with Elliott’s data showing E-Day has sold more than double what Halo: Campaign Evolved achieved. This success on Steam reflects the traditional retail model where players purchase games directly rather than accessing them through subscriptions.
Elliott’s report also speculates on the possibility of an eventual PlayStation 5 port, though no official announcement has been made. The case highlights an ongoing tension in the gaming industry between adoption of subscription services and traditional direct sales revenue models, with E-Day serving as a notable example of how platform-holder strategies can significantly affect a game’s commercial performance across different distribution channels.
