GTA 5 For Switch Mod Project Shuts Down, Dev Thanks Take-Two For Its “Mercy”
Paradise Productions, the creator of a mod project bringing Grand Theft Auto 5 to Nintendo Switch, has announced its shutdown effective October 3 following a cease-and-desist request from Take-Two Interactive, the rights holder of the GTA franchise.
The closure coincides with Rockstar Games publishing updated “Mod Guidelines” that explicitly prohibit modifying its games to operate on devices not officially supported by the company. GTA 5 has never received an official Switch release, making the community-led port a direct violation of these newly clarified policies.
In an announcement via GamesRadar, Paradise Productions thanked supporters while apologizing for failing to deliver the planned Switch version. The developer notably expressed gratitude to Take-Two, stating they are “thankful for Take-Two’s mercy”—a comment suggesting the situation could have resulted in more severe legal consequences.
The incident reflects ongoing tensions between the modding community and major publishers over intellectual property protection and official release strategies. While mods have traditionally extended game lifespans and remained popular within gaming culture, major publishers continue enforcing strict controls over their franchises. Take-Two’s action combined with Rockstar’s published guidelines signals a stricter enforcement stance against unauthorized ports and modifications of GTA titles.
