In another unprecedented move, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is changing double XP tokens so they count down in match and not real-time
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is implementing a significant change to double XP tokens, addressing a long-standing community complaint. The new system allows tokens to count down only during active gameplay, rather than in real-time regardless of player activity.
Previously, activating a double XP token would begin the countdown immediately, meaning players lost progress if they needed to step away from their controller, deal with connection issues, or take time building loadouts. This created frustration around token usage, as unforeseen circumstances like internet problems or interruptions could waste valuable progression items without the player gaining any benefit.
Activision announced the change via its official social channels, confirming that the new mechanic will apply at launch and beyond. The publisher also revealed that double XP tokens from previous Call of Duty titles and Warzone will carry over and remain usable in Modern Warfare 4, allowing players to retain their accumulated progression items across the franchise.
The update represents Activision’s efforts to be more responsive to community feedback. It comes shortly after the studio announced another feature improvement for Call of Duty: Warzone, demonstrating a pattern of addressing player quality-of-life concerns.
