“Let’s Aim For Disney” - Sonic Boss Reckons IP Has Only Reached Half Of Its Potential
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has stated that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has only reached approximately half of its potential. In an interview with Japanese magazine Continue, Iizuka revealed that SEGA’s original ambition for the series was to achieve Disney-level status and cultural prominence similar to what the animation giant has accomplished with its flagship franchises.
According to the interview, the development team set these ambitious goals from the franchise’s inception, viewing Disney as the benchmark for what Sonic could ultimately become. While the Sonic IP has grown significantly over the decades through games, merchandise, and media appearances, substantial room for expansion remains. The statement arrives at a particularly notable moment for the franchise, as recent Sonic movie releases have proven commercially successful and demonstrated the franchise’s appeal beyond traditional gaming audiences.
Iizuka’s comments suggest that SEGA views the film adaptations as crucial stepping stones toward achieving the broader cultural prominence originally envisioned for the Sonic brand, positioning the franchise for continued growth and expansion across multiple entertainment categories.
