Why so many Steam games have weirdly similar (and forgettable) names

Steam’s growing game library faces a discoverability challenge as numerous titles share confusingly similar names. Within a 12-month period alone, multiple games with overlapping “Dust” or “Dusk” nomenclature are releasing—including Duskfade, DUST: Origins, Dust Front RTS, Duskbloods, and Dungeons of Dusk—making them difficult for consumers to differentiate and remember.

While some titles escape this naming confusion through established brand recognition or developer pedigree, such as Dungeons of Dusk (a spin-off of a notable boomer shooter) or Duskbloods (from FromSoftware), independent titles like DUST: Origins and Duskfade risk being overlooked in Steam’s crowded marketplace due to their generic and interchangeable naming conventions. This pattern highlights a broader issue on the platform where similar game titles create friction in discoverability and player recognition, potentially disadvantaging smaller developers competing for attention.
