Steam’s discounts and events tab will soon be fully algorithm-driven

Valve has announced a significant overhaul of Steam’s “Discounts and Events” tab, scheduled to launch in 2027. The platform will transition from manual curation—where staff members and publishing partners schedule game promotions on a fixed calendar—to an algorithm-driven system that personalizes recommendations for each individual user.

Early testing of the algorithmic approach demonstrated substantial gains in engagement. Valve reported that personalized recommendations enabled the section to display 10 times more games to users daily, resulting in meaningful increases in store page visits, wishlists, and cart additions. The company stated that its goal is to “show the right game to the right customer” through improved discovery features.

Under the current system, all Steam users see the same curated promotional selections. The new approach will replace this uniform experience with individualized content predictions based on user behavior and preferences. This reflects Valve’s broader pattern of evolving Steam’s storefront functionality in recent years, aligning with industry-wide trends toward dynamically tailored content experiences.

The transition represents both an opportunity and a shift for the gaming community. While personalized recommendations could expose players to titles they might otherwise overlook and find genuinely interesting, the change also means Steam’s promotional page will no longer serve as a single, platform-wide showcase for major sales events visible to all users simultaneously.
