Thief Gets a New Sequel 30 Years Later — Here’s a First Look

Thirty years after the release of Thief: The Dark Project, the master thief Garrett is returning through a new officially licensed graphic novel titled Thief: Pulse of Promise. Published by Bit Bot, the graphic novel was written by Joshua Viola, known for his work on Legacy of Kain and The Rocky Horror Show, alongside Sean Eads, who has contributed to projects including Terror in the Corn and Lord Byron’s Prophecy.

Rather than serving as a complete reboot, Pulse of Promise functions as a missing narrative chapter in Garrett’s story, positioned chronologically between the original 1998 game The Dark Project and its 2000 sequel Thief II: The Metal Age. The graphic novel explores Garrett’s latest heist, which leads him into forgotten Keeper secrets and strange supernatural powers lurking beneath the City.

The project has launched on BackerKit as a crowdfunded initiative, bringing the iconic stealth protagonist to readers in a new medium. This marks a significant return for the Thief franchise, which has experienced limited releases in recent years. The graphic novel represents an effort to expand the franchise’s narrative universe and reach audiences through sequential art, extending the legacy of one of gaming’s most influential stealth franchises into new storytelling formats.
