The Elder Scrolls Online is partly why Skyrim never got a Fallout: New Vegas-style spin-off, says Bethesda veteran
According to Skyrim co-lead designer Kurt Kuhlmann, a 20-year Bethesda veteran, The Elder Scrolls Online was partly responsible for Skyrim never receiving a spin-off game similar to Fallout: New Vegas, which followed Fallout 3.
Kuhlmann explained that ESO essentially satisfied Elder Scrolls fans’ demand for new content during the period when Bethesda might otherwise have developed a single-player spin-off. Speaking to FRVR, he noted that the MMO “took the heat off” by providing an ongoing Elder Scrolls product with constant content updates.
“There was a new Elder Scrolls product, and it was ongoing. It was creating new content constantly,” Kuhlmann said, highlighting how ESO’s live-service model kept the franchise active in players’ minds while the studio focused its efforts elsewhere.
While the Elder Scrolls series had traditionally been known for its single-player experiences, The Elder Scrolls Online marked a significant departure by bringing the franchise into the multiplayer space. This strategic decision apparently influenced Bethesda’s approach to supporting the Skyrim playerbase, suggesting that an MMO supplementing the original game reduced the perceived need for a dedicated spin-off title to extend the franchise’s narrative or setting.
