‘We Have Been Gradually Preparing’: Capcom Already Has a Plan for When Its Resident Evil Remakes Catch Up With Newer Games

Capcom’s prolific remake strategy for the Resident Evil franchise is approaching a turning point, with executive producer Jun Takeuchi confirming that the publisher has begun planning for when its beloved remakes exhaust the series’ classic catalog.

The company has successfully reimagined Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, establishing the remakes as blockbuster successes. Building on this momentum, Capcom will release a Code Veronica remake next year, with a Resident Evil 0 remake reportedly scheduled for 2028. A Resident Evil 1 remake has also been considered for the pipeline.

Takeuchi described Resident Evil 7 as a “turning point” for the series, signaling the publisher’s awareness that the remake strategy will eventually catch up to the more modern entries. Once these planned remakes are complete, only Resident Evil 5 and 6 would remain as unmade mainline titles—games that represent a significant tonal and gameplay shift from the classic entries that have fueled the remake momentum.

Rather than scrambling when remakes run out of source material, Capcom has been “gradually preparing” for this juncture, according to Takeuchi. The comment suggests the publisher is developing a long-term strategy that may involve revisiting more recent games or exploring new directions for the franchise once the classic catalog is exhausted.
