Suda 51’s Grasshopper Manufacture splits from NetEase
Grasshopper Manufacture, the Japanese developer behind action classics No More Heroes and Killer7, has announced its independence from parent company NetEase Games, effective October 1, 2026. CEO Goichi “Suda 51” Suda made the announcement following the studio’s completion of Romeo is a Dead Man, stating the studio wishes to “deliver titles in an even wider variety of styles to video game lovers everywhere.”
NetEase acquired Grasshopper Manufacture in 2021 as part of its purchase of GungHo Group, subsequently providing funding, business planning support, and resources from thousands of artists and technical experts. The split comes as NetEase has been retreating from game investments, reportedly closing studios and withdrawing funding from major projects. However, both parties described the separation as amicable, with Suda emphasizing the decision came after “thorough discussions” and noting NetEase’s “generous cooperation.”
The independence reflects Grasshopper’s improved self-publishing capabilities and desire for creative autonomy to pursue more diverse game styles. The studio plans to continue creating distinctive titles under its core philosophy. The move represents another chapter in the ongoing consolidation and fragmentation of the gaming industry, as major publishers reassess their portfolios.
