GTA 6 completely “re-engineered” Rockstar’s weather systems to “achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before,” adding hurricanes, rainbows and heavy rain
Rockstar Games has completely re-engineered Grand Theft Auto 6’s weather system to create a more immersive and dynamic world. According to Owen Shepherd, the studio’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, the upgraded system introduces hurricanes, rainbows, and towering cumulonimbus clouds designed to deliver “a sense of scale we haven’t felt before.”
The new weather architecture is far more localized and persistent than Rockstar’s previous systems, including those featured in Red Dead Redemption 2. This technical advancement aims to make the open world feel authentically dynamic rather than merely cycling through preset weather states. The enhanced environmental simulation reflects Rockstar’s investment in advanced rendering and lighting technologies to elevate both visual fidelity and atmospheric immersion.
Beyond visual improvements, the persistent weather system suggests meaningful integration with gameplay, potentially creating environmental challenges and variety throughout the world. This technical undertaking complements a broader environmental ecosystem, with the game featuring 170 different animals—beasts, birds, and fish—that inhabit various locations and respond to their surroundings.
