Sony’s Helldivers Movie Has Been Pushed Back
Sony Pictures has rescheduled its Helldivers movie adaptation from November 10, 2027 to June 9, 2028, positioning it near the start of the summer box office season. The delay signals Sony’s confidence in the project, though it raises concerns about whether the live-service game will maintain cultural relevance after a two-year wait.
Alan Ritchson, known for starring in the Reacher series, has been cast to play one of the titular Helldivers. The film centers on an elite military unit battling alien creatures to protect the fictional planet Super Earth. Justin Lin, the director behind multiple Fast & Furious films, will helm the project, with producers including Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Justin Lin’s production company Perfect Storm Entertainment.
The casting marks a significant change from the project’s earlier plans. Jason Momoa, the Aquaman actor, was originally set to star but exited the film during summer 2026. The Helldivers franchise has proven popular with audiences; while the original game launched in 2015, the sequel Helldivers 2 achieved critical acclaim and drove interest in the film adaptation.
