Sony Officially Adds Requirement for Buying PS5 Pro

Sony is struggling to keep up with unprecedented demand for the PlayStation 5 Pro, the enhanced version of its current-generation console. The supply constraints are exacerbated by rising production costs, particularly for RAM and other components, which have driven console prices to record levels. Additionally, scalpers have been aggressively reselling the PS5 Pro at significantly inflated prices, further limiting legitimate consumer access.

To combat these challenges and ensure fair distribution among genuine players, Sony has implemented a lottery system for PS5 Pro purchases in Japan. The system includes specific eligibility requirements designed to prioritize actual gamers over resellers. Potential buyers must have a Japanese PlayStation Network account with active online services access. Furthermore, their PSN account must demonstrate a cumulative playtime of at least 60 hours, with this playtime accumulated beginning September 27.

These measures represent Sony’s attempt to redirect console inventory toward dedicated players rather than speculators. While the Japanese market is particularly affected by scalping and high demand, the lottery system and playtime requirement suggest Sony may expand similar protections to other regions if the supply and demand imbalance persists.
