Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons developers hope to set aside the Baldur’s Gate 3 comparisons and build their own kind of open world

Invoke Studios is positioning Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons as its own kind of open-world experience, hoping to move beyond comparisons to Baldur’s Gate 3. The developer showcased the fantasy RPG at Gamescom, presenting a sprawling landscape featuring the coastal town of Crickshank, dramatic coastlines, jagged mountains, and an imposing tower looming over the world.

The game follows Kaatri, a warrior protagonist, through an expansive world designed to reward curiosity and exploration. Invoke Studios emphasizes player agency as central to its vision, stating “We want the player to truly go out there … be curious.” Rather than guiding players along predetermined paths, the studio aims to foster organic discovery and encourage players to venture into unknown territories.

By highlighting these design philosophies at Gamescom, Invoke Studios appears intent on establishing Warlock’s distinct identity within the crowded open-world RPG genre. The developer’s emphasis on player-driven exploration suggests an approach that contrasts with narrative-focused competitors.
