Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature rolls out for Series consoles and Xbox One, allowing you to digitise your game-disc collection

Microsoft has officially launched Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature for all Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S console owners following a month-long testing period with Xbox Insiders. The feature allows players to convert physical game discs into digital licenses, enabling them to access their disc-based game collections digitally.

The rollout began on September 29-30, 2026, via a system update that automatically deployed to most consoles. Players can activate the feature by inserting compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S game discs while signed into their console. Upon insertion of a supported disc, the system generates a notification confirming the digital license has been claimed.

However, not all physical games are eligible for the conversion. Microsoft stated that disc-to-digital works with “most” physical games across both console generations, but noted that eligibility criteria may vary and change over time due to “technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, and other factors.” The company has compiled an expanding list of supported titles, though this list remains a work-in-progress as more games are added.

A notable feature of the program is its flexibility: players can claim digital licenses for Xbox Series X games using either an Xbox Series X or Xbox One console, making it accessible regardless of which console they own.

The timing of this feature’s launch comes amid broader industry discussions about physical media preservation, particularly following Sony’s recent disc policy announcements in 2026. Xbox’s disc-to-digital offering positions itself as a consumer-friendly response to these concerns, allowing players to retain access to their existing physical game libraries while transitioning to digital ownership.
