GTA 6 Doesn’t Compromise Scale For Detail, Rockstar Says

Rockstar Games has provided new details about Grand Theft Auto VI ahead of its November 19 launch, emphasizing that the studio is not compromising either scale or detail in the game’s development. Aaron Garbut, a Rockstar boss, told Game Informer that the developer has dialed up every aspect of the game, including detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction, and density. “We went the other way,” Garbut said, noting that Rockstar has never “created anything close to this before.”

Among the technical improvements being implemented is a completely re-engineered weather system. Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, explained that the studio wanted to create a weather system that is “more localized and persistent,” designed to make the weather in GTA 6’s Florida-inspired setting of Leonida feel “dynamically solid” while achieving a new sense of scale. The system features fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map, providing a broad spectrum of weather conditions.

The increased ambition reflects Rockstar’s commitment to delivering significant improvements in the game, with Garbut noting that “as the pressure for us on this project is huge, we dealt with that by doing our best to overdeliver.”
