Nvidia says my RTX 4070 Super isn’t capable of Multi Frame Gen, but I’m surprised by how smooth this unofficial unlock actually feels
An RTX 4070 Super owner successfully enabled Multi Frame Generation (MFG) on their graphics card through an unofficial workaround, despite Nvidia’s official claims that the feature is reserved for RTX 50-series GPUs. MFG is an AI-powered technology that generates up to five additional frames between rendered frames to deliver smoother gameplay and higher framerates.
Nvidia introduced Frame Generation with the RTX 40-series in 2022 but restricted higher MFG rates (up to 6x on the RTX 5090) to RTX 50-series cards, citing enhanced hardware capabilities including more powerful Tensor cores and a dedicated AI Management Processor (AMP). However, the successful unofficial unlock of MFG on the RTX 4070 Super demonstrates that older cards may be technically capable of handling the feature, and the results reportedly deliver surprisingly smooth performance.
This discovery raises questions about the nature of Nvidia’s MFG restrictions on RTX 40-series cards, suggesting the limitations may be at least partially software-imposed rather than purely hardware-based. The workaround provides RTX 40-series owners an alternative path to access frame generation technology without upgrading to newer, more expensive hardware.
