That’s some fiiiiine lookin’ milk, but Rust devs warn that ‘cream is a more powerful consumable’

Rust’s October update introduces livestock farming to the survival game, adding sheep and cows as new domesticated animals for players to manage. The animals produce multiple valuable commodities: meat, bones, leather, animal fat, milk (cows only), wool (sheep only), and dung.

Players have two primary approaches to livestock: they can butcher animals immediately for meat and byproducts, or they can build farms using new fence and gate blueprints to breed and maintain herds. The farming approach yields renewable resources including dung, milk, and wool.

Dung, already an existing resource in Rust, serves dual purposes—it can be converted into fertilizer to boost plant growth, or traded for scrap metal. The newly introduced milk and wool resources integrate into Rust’s broader crafting economy. Developers have noted that cream, a processed form of milk, is particularly powerful as a consumable, making dairy farming strategically important.

The update expands Rust’s survival mechanics and economic systems, providing players with new progression paths and opportunities for specialization. With livestock farming now available, players can establish dedicated agricultural operations as part of their survival strategies.
