Xbox Is Paying A Lot Less Than Normal For Kojima’s Physint, Possibly Under $200 Million – Report

Xbox has acquired Hideo Kojima’s spy-thriller game Physint at a significantly reduced cost compared to typical AAA game development budgets. According to The New York Times, Xbox’s agreement with Kojima Productions came at a price “substantially below what Xbox would typically spend to develop a premium game”—reportedly under $200 million.

The acquisition represents a major strategic move by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who has been reshaping the platform’s exclusive lineup since taking over from Phil Spencer. The deal came after Sony walked away from the project, marking a significant shift in exclusive content strategy.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that when Sony was developing Physint, the game’s budget had reached approximately $400 million, making it one of the industry’s most expensive projects. Sony’s decision to drop both Kojima and the project was reportedly driven by significant budget overruns and development delays—factors that made the project financially untenable for the PlayStation platform holder.

By acquiring the project at reportedly less than half of Sony’s peak budget, Xbox secured an exclusive AAA title while demonstrating fiscal discipline. The acquisition reflects broader industry trends of platform holders carefully evaluating development costs and return on investment, particularly in an era of high-profile project cancellations and consolidation within the gaming sector.
