Person Behind Viral AI-Generated Fallout: New York Game Hauls It Offline, Says Bethesda Issued Cease and Desist

An AI-generated Fallout fan game achieved viral attention before being rapidly shut down. The browser-based title Fallout: New York was created by a self-described “AI Creative” known as CHRIS FIRST using Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5. The project featured recognizable Fallout series elements including quests, dialogue trees, the iconic V.A.T.S. combat system, and a functional Pip-Boy interface.

Rather than using traditional game assets, Fallout: New York was entirely procedurally generated through AI code, with no texture or sound files—buildings, weapons, character models, and audio were all produced by algorithms. Despite the technical novelty, the game was widely criticized for poor visual quality, featuring notably distorted character faces and general aesthetic issues.

ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s parent company, responded swiftly with a cease-and-desist order just two days after the project’s public announcement. The game remained accessible for approximately three days before being removed. Notably, industry observers reported rare support for the takedown, as critics cited the AI-generated content’s poor quality and the creator’s minimal original creative input beyond directing the AI agents. The incident underscores growing tensions around AI-generated content that leverages established intellectual properties.
