Disney Responds To Rumor That It Could Buy Fortnite Studio Epic Games
Disney has denied rumors it is pursuing a full acquisition of Epic Games, despite having made a significant investment in the company. Disney President and Chief Creative Officer Dana Walden stated at Bloomberg’s Screentime event that while the company invested $1.5 billion for a 9% equity stake in Epic Games in 2024, an outright buyout is not currently being discussed. ‘Those are not the conversations we’re having right now,’ Walden said, emphasizing instead that Disney and Epic have a ‘great partnership.’
The two companies are collaborating on what they describe as ’transformational’ new games as part of building an ’entertainment universe connected to Fortnite.’ These partnerships have already resulted in Disney content appearing in Fortnite, and Fortnite has been integrated into Disney’s real-world theme parks. Walden indicated that multiple launches demonstrating the value of their partnership will occur over the next few years.
