I’ve been skeptical about Bandai Namco’s upcoming Gundam game—but then I saw this model kit’s chainsaw macuahuitl
Bandai Namco’s upcoming action game Gundam Rogue Orbit has shifted the traditional Gundam formula by introducing kaiju battles, a significant departure that has drawn skepticism from series traditionalists. However, the publisher’s reveal of an HG 1/144 scale Baowubalem model kit at Japan’s hobby show may be changing minds—particularly with the kit’s standout feature: a chainsaw macuahuitl weapon.
The distinctive weapon design and creative mecha aesthetic demonstrated through the model kit suggest the developers are committing to bold, unconventional designs for the title. While the game’s kaiju-focused direction raises questions about its place in the Gundam legacy, the quality of the accompanying model kit indicates Bandai Namco is treating the project with seriousness and creative ambition.
The game is scheduled to launch in spring, with the model kit information revealed as part of ongoing promotional efforts. The Baowubalem’s reveal demonstrates how merchandise tie-ins are being leveraged to build momentum and showcase the game’s design philosophy.
