Halo’s new steward Activision reportedly considering rebooting the series, with a team in Sledgehammer Games leading the charge

Microsoft has handed development of the next Halo game to Activision, marking a significant shift for the franchise. According to insider Rebs Gaming, Activision is reportedly considering a complete reboot of the series as part of this transition.

A new purpose-built team at Activision, potentially based within Sledgehammer Games (the developer behind Call of Duty), will lead the franchise going forward. This team is separate from existing Call of Duty development efforts.

The proposed reboot would represent a clean slate for Halo, moving away from the complex and convoluted lore accumulated over 25 years of games and spin-off media. The reboot could potentially explore Master Chief’s origins, offering players a fresh entry point to the franchise.

Sledgehammer Games has already presented conceptual prototypes to Activision, including designs for a free-to-play multiplayer game and a story campaign built using the Infinity Ward engine. However, sources emphasize that nothing is finalized yet—these remain proposals under consideration.
