Buckle Up, Memory Shortages Are Reportedly Set To Get Worse In 2027
Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has warned that the ongoing global memory shortage will worsen throughout 2027 and extend into 2028, with customers facing significantly higher prices. Speaking during Micron’s financial results earnings call, Mehrotra confirmed that the supply-demand environment is “only getting tighter,” and that the company has already pre-sold the majority of its memory production for the coming year.
The escalating crisis comes as demand for RAM and memory components continues to far exceed available supply. According to Mehrotra, buyers will pay “much higher prices” for memory in 2027 compared to 2026 levels. The shortage has been driven in part by surging demand from artificial intelligence datacenters, which have significantly increased their procurement of memory components.
The crisis is creating ripple effects across multiple industries, particularly in consumer electronics and gaming hardware. Xbox leadership has publicly acknowledged the impact on next-generation console development, with executives discussing industry-wide “component crisis” challenges and the need to “innovate on affordability and efficiency” during this period of constrained supply.
Notably, Micron is one of three major memory manufacturers—alongside Samsung and SK Hynix—currently facing a US lawsuit alleging price fixing related to the memory shortage. The allegations add another layer to an already-challenging market situation for consumers and manufacturers alike.
