PS5 gets “AI-guided upscaling” a bit like PS5 Pro’s, and it’s available now in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei

Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-guided image upscaling technology for PlayStation 5. The new feature is now available in two games: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.

QSSR is positioned as an optimized version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is Sony’s premium AI-guided upscaling technology exclusive to the PS5 Pro console. While PSSR on PS5 Pro represents the “gold standard” of this technology, QSSR is tailored to work efficiently on the standard PS5 hardware.

The technology provides visual improvements including enhanced image detail and improved stability through what Sony describes as a “hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5.” This optimization allows developers to incorporate sophisticated AI upscaling capabilities without compromising the performance of PS5 games.

The availability of QSSR on standard PS5 hardware could enable more games to benefit from AI-guided upscaling technology, expanding beyond the exclusive features previously reserved for PS5 Pro owners. This move suggests Sony is committed to bringing advanced rendering techniques across its PlayStation ecosystem, though the implementation on standard PS5 will be less demanding than the PS5 Pro version.
