PS5 gets “AI-guided upscaling” a bit like PS5 Pro’s, and it’s available now in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei
Sony has announced AI image upscaling technology for PlayStation 5 called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). The feature is positioned as a more efficient version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which was introduced on the PS5 Pro and serves as Sony’s premium “AI-guided upscaling” solution. QSSR is now available in two titles: Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
According to Sony’s official announcement, QSSR provides improvements to image detail and visual stability through a carefully hand-tuned implementation specifically optimized to maximize performance on base PS5 hardware. While functionally similar to PSSR, QSSR represents a more streamlined approach designed to work efficiently within the PS5’s existing performance envelope.
This development represents a significant move in bringing advanced AI-powered upscaling capabilities to mainstream PS5 users without requiring hardware upgrades. By making this technology available on the base console, Sony aims to help developers achieve better visual fidelity in games while maintaining solid frame rates—a key concern for performance-conscious players.
The availability of QSSR in both Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei suggests these titles will serve as flagship examples of the technology in practice, potentially establishing a pattern for broader adoption across future PS5 releases.
