Modder Deliberately Corrupts Their Own Hugely Popular Total War: Warhammer III Mod as Row Over AI Escalates
The creator of one of Total War: Warhammer III’s most popular mods has deliberately corrupted their own creation in protest of unauthorized AI-generated reuploads.
Venris, the veteran modder behind the Simply Fun Overhaul (SFO) series, created SFO: Grimhammer III, a comprehensive mod that overhauls the base game to align more closely with Warhammer lore. The modification changes everything from campaign and battle mechanics to the game’s economy and customization systems. The mod has gained significant popularity, supported by a Patreon that helps fund its ongoing development.
The deliberate corruption was implemented specifically to combat unauthorized reuploads of SFO: Grimhammer III, particularly those that incorporate AI-generated elements. According to Venris, the corruption aims to prevent the mod from functioning with these unauthorized versions, giving the creator greater control over where and when the latest version can be obtained.
Frustrated by the growing number of unauthorized reuploads, Venris has threatened to make the mod entirely private if the situation does not improve. This decision reflects broader tensions within the modding community regarding intellectual property rights, the use of AI in modifications, and creators’ ability to maintain control over their work.
