Yoshida Thinks Switch 2 and PS5 Should Stay ‘For As Long As Possible’

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has advocated for Sony and Nintendo to maintain their current-generation consoles on the market for as long as possible. Speaking in a recent interview with The Verge, Yoshida suggested that both the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 should delay next-generation hardware releases.

Yoshida’s comments come as the PS5 enters its sixth year since its 2020 launch, with Sony having introduced the PS5 Pro as a mid-generation refresh. Nintendo’s Switch 2, by contrast, remains in its early market phase following its recent release. Yoshida’s position reflects considerations around consumer behavior and hardware value propositions.

According to Yoshida’s reasoning, players who already own capable systems—such as a PS5, Switch 2, or sufficiently powerful PC—may lack motivation to upgrade to next-generation consoles. This perspective suggests that premature next-gen releases could result in weak adoption rates and consumer resistance to new hardware pricing. Yoshida’s comments highlight broader industry strategic questions about console lifecycle management, suggesting that extending the current generation remains commercially viable for both platform holders.
