Capcom plans to evolve RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine”
Capcom unveiled plans to evolve its RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine” during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 held on October 2nd. The initiative, called the REX Project, was presented by programmer Satoshi Ishida and aims to address key challenges facing modern game development.
The RE Engine, which has powered approximately 30 Capcom titles since its 2017 debut with Resident Evil 7, faces production bottlenecks as games grow in scope and data volume, slowing both iteration and build times. The REX Project proposes integrating AI technology into development workflows to improve development speed, efficiency, and quality assurance.
Importantly, Capcom emphasized that “AI-generation” refers to AI-assisted development rather than AI-generated content. The company’s vision is “a future where we create games together with AI”—leveraging artificial intelligence as a tool to streamline development processes rather than replacing human creativity. While Capcom has not yet embraced generative AI for in-game content creation, the REX Project represents a broader industry trend toward AI adoption in game development workflows.
