Memory shortages set to persist into 2028, warns Micron CEO
Micron Technology has warned that global RAM shortages will persist through 2028, with the company having already sold most of its 2027 production capacity. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra told investors that memory prices will remain significantly above 2026 levels as demand continues to drastically outpace supply. The shortage is being driven primarily by demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) required for AI datacenters, with most available capacity already committed to these applications.
Mehrotra stated the industry’s supply-demand balance is “only getting tighter” and acknowledged that Micron has “no line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.” The shortage extends beyond datacenters and will likely impact memory availability and pricing across consumer electronics, gaming hardware, and enterprise systems through the forecast period.
The warning comes as Micron reports record earnings, capitalizing on the surge in AI-related semiconductor demand. However, the company’s limited visibility into market stabilization suggests customers across industries should prepare for sustained constraints and elevated costs.
