Fourth RuneScape MMO Built With Unreal Engine in the Works, Jagex Announces RuneScape Animation With MoistCr1TiKaL

Jagex announced RuneScape 4, a new MMO in the long-running RuneScape franchise, at RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham, England. Built on Unreal Engine, the game is designed for a new generation of players while maintaining the depth, freedom, and community-led spirit that has defined the series for 25 years.

Originally conceived as an expansion to RuneScape: Dragonwilds called Shadows of Ashenfall, the project evolved into a full standalone MMO. The Dragonwilds team realized player feedback requesting more social mechanics and persistent multiplayer elements aligned with what a “typical Jagex game” should offer, including persistent servers, high player counts, and player-to-player trading. This creative evolution ultimately led to RuneScape 4’s development as a distinct title.

The game is currently in early development with no expected release for at least a few years. A teaser trailer presented at RuneFest showcases a medieval fantasy aesthetic blending elements from RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape, featuring dragons, sprawling valleys, floating islands, and bustling towns.

Beyond RuneScape 4, Jagex announced an animated RuneScape adaptation in partnership with YouTuber MoistCr1TiKaL. Jagex currently operates three major RuneScape titles: the main RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
