Capcom Is Looking To Evolve Its RE Engine Into An ‘AI-Generation Game Engine’

Capcom has announced plans to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an “AI-Generation Game Engine” through the REX initiative. The announcement was made by Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026.

The company’s vision centers on “creating games together with AI,” representing a strategic push to integrate artificial intelligence throughout the game development pipeline. The REX initiative specifically targets the persistent challenge of lengthy development cycles, with planned improvements spanning development tools, quality assurance processes, and overall production efficiency. This reflects a commitment to addressing modern game development bottlenecks.

By incorporating AI generation capabilities into the RE Engine, Capcom aims to streamline what has traditionally been a time-intensive creative and technical process. These enhancements are designed to address various bottlenecks that extend development timelines, including asset creation, testing, optimization, and other production phases. The initiative reflects broader industry trends toward leveraging generative AI to accelerate development workflows, reduce time-to-market for new titles, and improve team productivity across the entire development cycle.
