HBO Officially Changes a Fundamental Rule of Green Lantern Canon
HBO’s Lanterns series makes a significant departure from established DC Comics canon by introducing a newly forged Green Lantern created by Sinestro on the contaminated planet Antaan. The show follows John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), who initially rejects his destiny as a Green Lantern after becoming disillusioned with the Guardians of the Universe’s treatment of the Manhunters. After this rejection in episode 5, John is offered a second chance at superhero powers in the season finale, “Dirt and Stars,” but with substantial drawbacks tied to the franchise’s iconic villain Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen).
The new Green Lantern power source represents a fundamental shift from traditional DC Comics lore, where the Guardians of the Universe select and distribute Green Lantern rings. In the show, Sinestro crafted an alternative Lantern on Antaan, a world whose environment had been weaponized and contaminated by Manhunter Zoe. This change reimagines the origin of Green Lantern powers within the HBO adaptation, potentially setting up new story dynamics and conflicts as the series continues.
