Capcom aims to enhance its propriety RE Engine with AI to accelerate efficiency in QA, debugging, and data processing
Capcom has unveiled an ambitious initiative called “REX” to integrate artificial intelligence into its proprietary RE Engine, aiming to streamline game development and enhance operational efficiency. The multi-phase project targets critical development areas including quality assurance, debugging, and data processing.
The RE Engine, developed beginning in 2014 and first employed for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, has become a cornerstone of Capcom’s development infrastructure, with an estimated 2,000+ developers utilizing the technology across various projects.
As part of the REX initiative, Capcom plans to enhance the engine’s capabilities with AI tools designed to accelerate workflows and reduce development friction in modern triple-A game production. Notably, the company intends to open-source certain improvements to support broader AI training efforts, positioning the initiative as a collaborative contribution to the industry.
The company’s long-term vision is to evolve the RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine.” This strategic direction reflects broader industry trends toward AI-assisted development tools and represents Capcom’s commitment to optimizing its development pipeline.
Details of the initiative were presented by programmer Satoshi Ishida at Capcom’s recent annual technology conference, signaling executive backing for the project and its importance to the company’s future development strategy.
