Claims that genAI speeds up PC ports of classic games are either “false” or missing the point, says Banjo Kazooie: Recompiled developer

A developer behind the unofficial Banjo: Recompiled PC port has challenged widespread claims that generative AI significantly accelerates the process of porting classic games to modern platforms. DarioSamo, a member of the modding group that released the N64 platformer recompilation earlier this year, argues that assertions about AI-driven speed improvements are either “false” or fundamentally miss the point about what game porting entails.

According to DarioSamo’s analysis, decompiling original games—the process of converting machine code into human-readable source code to enable compatibility with modern systems—is merely the opening stage of a substantial undertaking. The developer contends that significant downstream work remains after successful decompilation, and that this additional effort represents a critical part of the porting journey that generative AI advocates frequently overlook or underestimate.

The commentary reflects broader industry discussion about AI’s actual utility in game development workflows. While some industry figures have suggested that AI tools could streamline the porting process for vintage titles, DarioSamo’s perspective suggests that such claims either overstate AI’s capabilities or misunderstand the complexity of bringing decades-old games to contemporary hardware and software environments.
