Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ Mode Adds A Social Hangout With Plenty Of Perks

Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is back as an expanded extraction mode with significant new features. The mode, which debuted in Modern Warfare II in 2022, returns with a new Forward Operating Base (FOB) social hub that players use between matches. The FOB serves as a command center where players can manage loadouts, upgrade operators, test weapons at a firing range, store loot, and socialize with teammates. The hub progressively unlocks new stations and features as players advance through the mode’s 70-level progression system.

Gameplay takes place on the new Hajin map, an open-world combat environment where players drop in to loot, complete varied mission types, and engage both NPC enemies and rival operators. Successfully extracting from the map lets players keep their rewards; dying results in losing all gear and potentially operators. The mode offers multiple mission types with varying risk levels, giving players choice in how they approach each run.

Infinity Ward is positioning DMZ as a major component of Modern Warfare 4’s offerings, with significant world-building and lore elements. The studio describes it as an “Action Extraction Shooter,” targeting a more action-heavy experience compared to hardcore extraction games like Escape from Tarkov. Infinity Ward has compared DMZ’s scope and ambition to Warzone, suggesting it aims to have similar impact on the extraction shooter genre. The studio has invested heavily in the mode’s development, with a 15-minute deep dive video exploring its origins and evolution.

Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, with DMZ expected to be a central feature of the game’s live-service offering.
