RuneScape 4 is a new Unreal Engine MMO which reportedly grew out of a planned Dragonwilds expansion, though it’s still a long way off
Jagex has announced RuneScape 4, a new mainline entry in the long-running RuneScape franchise of MMOs, at this year’s RuneFest. The new game is being developed with Unreal Engine and aims to bring the world of Gielinor to life with modern technology and game design possibilities while maintaining the depth, freedom, and community-led spirit that has defined RuneScape for over 25 years.
According to reports, RuneScape 4 reportedly evolved from a planned Dragonwilds expansion before becoming a full new entry in the franchise. The project remains in early development and is described as being “a long way off” from release. Jagex emphasized the ambitious scope of the endeavor, highlighting how the new game will combine classic RuneScape elements with contemporary game engine capabilities and design possibilities unavailable in the original games.
The announcement represents a significant milestone for the franchise as Jagex continues to actively support existing RuneScape titles while planning for the series’ long-term future direction.
